Inspired by The Legacy of Archie Cavanaugh
Black and White Raven Company was founded to honor the life and artistic legacy of Archie Cavanaugh, Shaa T’aak, a talented Tlingit artist from the Y’eil (Raven) Gaanaxteidi’ clan. Born in Wrangell and raised in Kake, Alaska, Archie’s creativity knew no bounds—his work spanned formline design, metalwork, painting, and leatherwork. He learned the foundations of traditional Tlingit art from Mick and Rick Beasley of Juneau and later refined his skills under mentors such as Wayne Price, Steve Brown, and Duane Bosch. His mastery of the craft earned him accolades, including first place in the Sealaska Heritage Institute juried art show in 2012, and many of his works are now housed in the Alaska State Museum.
Following Archie’s passing in 2018, his granddaughter, Chloey Cavanaugh (Was’ineidi Tax’Hit, Eagle Wolf Clan), felt compelled to ensure that his artistic legacy lived on. With a B.S. in Marketing Communication, she began transforming his sketches and carving templates into graphic art, preserving them in a way that future generations could cherish and share.
- Inspired by the Raven, a central figure in Tlingit culture, the name Black and White Raven Company reflects the duality of tradition and innovation—honoring the past while embracing modern design.
- Transforming Archie’s original sketches into contemporary graphics ensures that his vision continues to be seen and appreciated by a wider audience.
- A mission of remembrance and giving back, where profits from his artwork help support causes Archie was passionate about, such as donating Trickster Company basketballs to Kake’s open gym in honor of his love for the sport and his hometown.
For Chloey, this work is more than preservation—it is a way to keep her grandfather’s spirit alive, ensuring that every design continues to tell his story while also uplifting the community he loved. Black and White Raven Company stands as a bridge between generations, carrying forward Archie’s artistic vision and cultural heritage into the future.
